Anyway, I’ve noticed a little apprehension and confusion about Jakotsu, and I’d just like to clarify a few things in the hopes that you feel a little more assured and illuminated. Mmmm, illumination! M’kay now, let’s all sit together in the circle of understanding and friendship…indian style is preferred, but totally optional!

Yes, Jakotsu is in fact male; and yes he prefers a traditionally female style of dress (hence the thigh flattering kimono and sassy red lipstick!)But kids we cannot call him a transvestite; that, technically, is a person born as one gender who feels very strongly they are the opposite gender, and thus elects to undergo a surgical procedure so that their personal parts match how they perceive themselves. Studies lean favorable towards this condition being the result of genetic coding. You see guys, there are just oodles of genes our parents give us to make us who we are, most of the time the genes in our brains match the ones that determine our physical shape, but sometimes they don’t, and that can be a very hard thing to overcome. However, it can be done! But I digress…

It is not evident that this is Jakotsu’s predicament, as he does not express much interest in becoming a female. As for Jakotsu being gay, I don’t think this is the case either. A person who is gay desires to have an emotional and physical relationship with another person who happens to be of the same gender. It is a very nitty gritty specific way of describing that marvelous thing we call love. [mmmm warm gushy feeling].

Jakotsu’s ultimate intention is just to kill the men he says he is enamored with. It is my thought that this characteristic is a tool used by the writers of Inuyasha to make Jakotsu a most effective opponent. As you see evidently, his advances confuse his victims and throw them off guard, much in the same way as some of you have been confused. However, this is the invention of modern writers, as homosexuality was actually quite common in feudal japan, and Jakotsu’s comments would just seem silly during a fight. But I believe Jakotsu is what we call a sadist: someone who derives pleasure by inflicting pain. In this way, these people feel as though they can possess others. Think of it as the same emotion we feel towards Inuyasha, admiration, but this veers a bit to the dark side. All in all, I think it makes him quite an interesting character…don’t you?
